PDP 7 - Aguinaldo's Case Against the United States
Date/Context: This article was written in 1899 when the United States began to invade the Philippines. It was written after the United States began to realize their trouble in the Philippines.
Summary: Throughout the article, the author talks about the many mistakes the Americans have made while trying to take over the Philippines. The Americans did not realize how many people would be lost while trying to take over the Philippines. Not only would the people die in the war that is currently going on to try to take them over but they would also die from the harsh climate that they were not used to. The author mentioned that the people of America wanted another nation to be free and not by force. The situation was similar between the other nation and the Philippines. The Author wanted the Americans to leave the Philippines.
Key Quotation: " You took a wrong step, and you had not sufficient moral courage to retrace it."
I think that Jarred did a pretty good job at summarizing the article concisely. He does a good job at describing the deaths and some other negative factors exerted through the US's control. One thing that he left out, however, was that the Philippines also wanted their liberty because they felt as though their culture and history was being destroyed. In addition, the author goes in to great detail in regards to the unjust situation that they face considering how the US has treated other countries in the past, such as Cuba. In addition, I believe that Jarred should elaborate more on the Author Bio, it's understandable that it could be a little difficult to dig up information about the author but he should maybe explain in more depth how he knows so much about the topic. Finally, I think that the quote that Jarred picked could stand some improvement. Since the text in it's entirety is very powerfully worded, I think that a quote such as, "Now, here is an unique spectacle the Filipinos fighting for liberty, the American people fighting them to give them liberty," might be more appropriate to captivate the text. Overall though, I believe that he wrote a very concise and good summary.
