PDP 7 - Speech to Rally at Shwedagon Pagoda

Author Bio - Aung San Suu Kyi who made this speech 1988. She made this in opposition of the Burmese military regime. Although she spent most of her life overseas, she returned to Burma to visit her mother and saw massacres of demonstrators protesting the military regime. Aung San Suu Kyi then took it upon herself to fight for human rights in Burma. She became the leader for the National League for Democracy and many people hold her up to father who was a leader of the democracy movement in Burma as well.

Date/Context - This speech takes place in 1988 and marks Aung San Suu Kyi's start of her fight against Burma's oppressive regime. Before this time many other rallies had taken place, and they ended in the violent death of many protestors. At this time the people of Burma were fighting for a multi-party democracy and Suu Kyi emphasizes this objective. They had also recently became independent, thanks to the help of her father, but the army had become disparate from the people. She also argues to reunite the country.

Summary - Throughout this speech Suu Kyi speaks of uniting the people with one common goal; to create a multi-party democracy. She illustrates Burma's need for a fair government. Suu Kyi also talks of how her father has chose to stay out of politics, but by being his daughter, it by her duty to get involved. She also speaks of the oppressive government. This reaches out to the army as well. When the country first gained independence her father had helped shaped the army, many people in it have even raised her, but she realizes that it has shifted its ideals from the needs of the people. Many Suu Kyi requests change in the government for the people.

Key Quotation - "Democracy is an ideology that allows everyone to stand up according to his beliefs. They should not be threatened or endangered. Each one should go forward towards his own goal. Do not because of your greater strength be vengeful towards those who are of weaker strength."
